Have questions about storing with us? Here are answers to the most common ones. Don't see your question? Call us at (828) 322-2323 — a local team member will pick up.
We offer a range of drive-up units. Standard sizes 5x10, 10x10, 10x15, 10x20, 10x30, and 20x30. Some larger units include double-door (drive-through) access — useful for boats, vehicles, or oversized loads. 5x10 fits a small bedroom or seasonal items, 10x10 holds the contents of an average studio or 1-bedroom apartment, 10x20 holds a 3-4 bedroom house or contractor equipment, and our larger units work well as contractor garage and flex space for vehicles, equipment, business inventory, or full-household moves. Outdoor parking spaces for RVs, boats, trailers, and vehicles are also available.
Our gate is open 6 AM to 10 PM every day, seven days a week. You don't need to schedule access — your unique gate code lets you in and out anytime within those hours. Office hours are by appointment.
The fastest way is online at our Rent Now page. You pick a unit size, enter your information, sign the rental agreement electronically, pay, and receive your gate code immediately — usually within five minutes start to finish. You can move in the same day, often within the hour. If you prefer to rent over the phone, call us at (828) 322-2323.
No. All units rent month-to-month with no long-term commitment. You give a 30-day notice when you're ready to move out, and that's it — no early termination fees, no long-term lock-in.
No security deposit is required to rent a unit. You pay your first month's rent and any applicable admin fee at signup, and you're moved in.
We accept all major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover) and debit cards. Most customers set up automatic monthly billing through their online account. Cash and check payments can be arranged with the office in advance — call ahead to set that up.
Yes. Cardinal State Storage Hickory offers outdoor parking spaces specifically sized for boats, RVs, jet skis, motorcycles, trailers, and other vehicles. Convenient to US-321 and US-70 for getting your boat or RV in and out for the weekend.
Yes — we work with contractors, tradespeople, landscapers, small businesses, and anyone who needs contractor garage and flex space outside their primary location. The larger units work well as a small commercial bay at a fraction of typical lease costs — tools, equipment, work-truck overflow, seasonal inventory, documents, and trade-show or job-site materials. Many local business tenants pick up the equivalent of a service bay or contractor garage at storage prices.
We require a disc lock — padlocks aren't accepted because they're easier to cut. You can pick up a quality disc lock for around $15-$20 at any local hardware retailer: Lowe's, Home Depot, Harbor Freight, Walmart, or Tractor Supply. You're the only one with the key — we don't keep copies.
We work with a lot of customers moving in and out of the area. You can reserve and rent a unit online from anywhere before you arrive, get the gate code in advance, and pull straight in when your moving truck shows up. For long-term storage, the month-to-month structure means you keep the unit as long as you need — many of our customers have been with us for years.
Rent is due on the first of each month. If a payment is missed, you'll get reminder messages by email and text. Late fees apply per our rental agreement. If a unit becomes delinquent for an extended period, North Carolina self-storage law allows the facility to auction the contents — but we work hard to reach customers before it ever gets to that point. Call us anytime if you're in a tough month and we'll work with you where we can.
Yes. Cardinal State Storage Hickory is locally owned and operated. When you call (828) 322-2323, you reach a local team member — not a national call center. Decisions about pricing, customer accommodations, and how we run the facility are made locally. We're part of a small portfolio of family-run storage facilities serving Caldwell County, Catawba County, and the upper Greenville County areas.
Yes — we're a few minutes from the CVCC main campus, which makes us a practical option for students storing dorm contents over breaks, faculty downsizing, or staff with overflow.
We're in northwest Hickory at 1045 2nd Ave NW, about 5-10 minutes from downtown Hickory and the Lenoir-Rhyne University area depending on traffic. From US-321, exit onto 2nd Ave NW — we're between McDonald's and Starbucks.
Just call us at (828) 322-2323 or stop by during office hours.
